Iceland Day 10

Once again, it rained all night and was still raining in the morning. We had a quick breakfast of yogurt and bananas for easy clean up and prepared to head out. First we had to empty the toilet waste, then the grey water from the camper. It was easier than I thought and we had it done in 10 minutes.

We had an hour and a half drive to Reykjavik to return the camper. We stopped at Costco to fill up with gas as it was the cheapest gas in the area. The check engine light was still on when we approached Reykjavik. However when we were 10KM From the Camper Rental location, the light went off. Whatever!

We were expecting a long checkout process when we returned the camper based on our experience picking it up, but were happily surprised when it only took 20 minutes. No issues with the check engine light, apparently it is a common issue that was never explained to us.

Unfortunately this put us ahead of schedule to pick out our rental car. We were 45 minutes early and Avis would not give us a car until our scheduled time. Otherwise they would charge us an extra day of rental. (We decided to rent a car because it as $60 person for a shuttle ride one way to the city as well on $60 return to the airport when we fly out on Tuesday. The rental was only $200, much cheaper then the shuttle fees for 3 people) We waited 30 minutes and got our car. (Editor’s Note: Wendell got a hot dog at the airport but I did not so no ranking updates).

It was nice driving a car vs a camper. Plus, it was an automatic transmission (Bonus!). We were able to get reservations at Blue Lagoon and drove there. The Blue Lagoon is a hot spring near the airport with a lot of amenities. Admission included towels, a free drink at the swim up bar as well as a free facial with the minerals in the water. It was a relaxing hour. Fun picture taking in the blue waters of the spring. It is a mixture of geothermal seawater and fresh water. Supposed to be good for your skin. I felt great just floating around.

A quick drive to Reykjavik and we were at our hotel. Sandy used her Marriot points and got us into the Reykjavik Edition, a Marriott hotel. It is very swanky in the lobby, but the rooms are standard American Super 8. We are just happy to sleep on mattresses tonight and not foam!

The hotel is right on the water front next to all the attractions and stores. We found a seafood restaurant (Fish Market) and were happy to see a menu that did not include pizza, burgers and fish and chips. The food was wonderful! On our way to the restaurant I came across an Irish Pub advertising Guinness. I had to stop in to drink a Guinness to continue my quest to sample a Guinness in every country. As I have stated before, when I took a tour of the Guinness Brewery in Dublin years back I learned that they make a different Guinness recipe for each country. I think I will start a blog to document my tastings and ratings.

Went back to the hotel for a relaxing night. Tomorrow we tour Reykjavik!
