Iceland Day 9

It rained all night and it was still raining when we got up. We finished the eggs and ham in the refrigerator for breakfast. This will be our last full day of driving in Irving (the RV).

Started our drive to Vik and stopped at Fjadragljufur Canyon. It was a short drive off of Hwy1, but very treacherous with narrow roads and ones lane bridges on a hill around a corner. There was not a way to see around the corner to see if a car was coming. You just had to hope for the best. There was short hike from the parking lot to the canyon and easy hike to the top of a viewing area. It was still raining, so we kept the visit to a minimum.

We arrived at Vik and the weather cleared, so we decided to take advantage of the weather break and drove past Vik and straight to Black Sand Beach. It was very windy, but it was coming from the land, not the sea. This kept the sand from blasting the cars in the parking lot. Apparently this is a thing and you need extra insurance coverage for this very reason. We did not have this coverage. But we were good because of the direction of the wind. The beach is worth the visit. There is a basalt cave on the beach and rock towers just off the water. We got a lot of great photos.

We drove back to Vik where we had tickets for The Only Live Lava Show in the World. My expectations were low, but the show was very entertaining and amazing to watch. It was also very hot once the lava flowed into the room. Did not need a jacket for this show. We learned all about the local volcano, Kafka, that has erupted every 50 years since Iceland has been settled. The last eruption was 1918, It is way over due for an eruption. Plus they mentioned that there have been 12 earthquakes in the last 6 months. That is more than they have recorded in the last 10 years. I had an overwhelming desire to leave. They did give us instruction on where to go if we got phone alerts about an eruption. This did not do much to make me feel better.

Then we went to the Lava Cafe. As you can see there was a theme to the day. It was nice not to eat in the RV for a change.

One last stop at the Katla Wool Studio. This is a nice little workshop and shop where you can buy local Icelandic wool products. Wendell and Pearl made some nice purchases. We left town before the volcano erupted.

We drove another hour to Selfoss where we camped for the night. Our last night in the RV. This campsite is very nice. They have a kitchen we can use with a shelf of items other travelers have left behind. We added to the shelf with unopened food we did not use. Would have been nice to have stopped here on our first night! There were a lot of salt boxes and cooking oils.

We took the time to clean up the camper and pack our things back into our suitcases. We will be dropping off the camper back to the rental place tomorrow morning. Hoping for a quick drop off and ride to the car rental place.
