Iceland Day 11
Had a nice sleep and everyone slept in. Grabbed a chocolate croissant and a cappuccino in the cafe at the hotel. The hotel also provided a walking tour map of downtown Reykjavik. We followed the tour along the harbor past The Sun Voyager. A modern sculpture that resembles a Viking Long Boat. However, it is actually a dream boat and an ode to the sun. It represents the promise of undiscovered territory and a dream of hope, progress and freedom.
A quick turn into the city away from the harbor and we reached Hallgrimskirkja Church. A Lutheran church built between 1948 and 1965. It has a modern look to it with its stepped concrete columns representing the basalt columns found all over Iceland. It is the largest and tallest church in Iceland. There is also a statue of Leif Ericsson in front of the church.
Our tour took us down Skolavordustigur street Where we passed many shops and the Rainbow Street of Reykjavik. We grabbed a hotdog at the famous Beajarins Beztu Plysur hotdog stand. There was a huge line with locals and tourists. One of the best hotdogs I have ever had!
We walked around some more and stopped at Hresso Traditional Icelandic Bistro. It was a nice stop to rest and warm us with some Irish coffe and local traditional appetizers.
We spent the rest of the day exploring and shopping. There was not much shopping outside of Reykjavik, so this was our opportunity to pick up gifts and souvenirs.
One last stop. We needed to stop at the most visited museum in Iceland. The Phallological Museum (Penis Museum). Out has over 217 mammal penises on display. We did not have time to tour the whole museum, so we just visited the gift shop. Pearl was able to pick up a number of souvenirs for her friends.
The hotel had a spa with hot tub, steam room and sauna. This was a great way to unwind after a day of walking and shopping. For Diner we went to Apotek Restaurant for our last big meal in Iceland. They had lots of traditional foods and and amazing dessert menu with all types of mousse. Yum!
Repacked all our bags and got ready for an early departure the next morning. We need to be out by 6:15am to drive to the airport and catch our flight.
